France is one of the most visited countries in the world. Having an incredibly well organized transport system and being a relatively large country, flying between French cities makes sense and has become affordable even for the budget traveler.
France has 185 airports which link the country to cities all over the world and offer easy transport between cities in France as well. Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris Strasbourg and Toulouse are just some of the major French cities that have their own airports.
Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport
The majority of international flights arrive on Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) in Paris, making it the most crowded French airport. But it’s also the largest and notoriously confusing. There are three terminals but most major airlines fly into Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. So before the flight make sure to confirm which Terminal you need to use and allow plenty of time for getting used to the airport.
To get from the airport –which is located 15 miles/ 24 km NE of Paris -to the city you have several alternatives: RER B-Regional Rapid Transit- which departs from Terminal 2, Roissybus, Les Cars Air France, taxi or private hotel shuttle services.
Lyon Saint-Exupery International Airport
Although not in the top ranks because of its capacity or flights handled, Lyon’s airport is ideal for those looking to spend their vacation in the Alps. International flights link the city to almost every corner of the world and to all major French cities. The airport is served by a TGV line -Train à Grande Vitesse (high speed train network) -as well as Satobus, which will take you to the city in about 20-30 minutes (€8.60 if you are over 24 years old; €6.50 if you are under 24 years old). Due to its location -25 km/15.5 miles east of Lyon- the cab fare to the city center is roughly €75.
Nice Airport
Nice has one of the busiest airports in France. The airport handles frequent flights to Paris, as well as Europe, North America, North Africa and Middle East. There are two terminals but most flights arrive on Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 is used mainly by Air France and Easyjet. To get from the airport to the city you can catch one of the buses or the train. Hotels also offer shuttle services so make sure to ask when you book your hotel.
If you plan to go to Monaco, Cannes or all train stations near the Italian border at Ventimiglia you can pick up a TER train. The station -Nice St Augustin- is located really close to the airport and can be reached via underpasses and road-crossings.
An added bonus is that upon departure and arrival, if the weather is nice, you get to see some of the best views of the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur).
