Brian, check out the post publishing in a couple of days on Bastille day celebrations. I mention to definitely check out Carcassonne and the fireworks for the holiday.

Likewise the Languedoc Rousillon region is also very alive and busy catering for the droves of people who head south for July and August, especially August. Carcassonne as mentioned, is a fabulous place to visit and "La Cite - ablaze" on Bastille day is worth the visit to the region alone.

Jean, you are right, July is a lovely time to vacation in France. In fact, despite the fact there are more tourists, it is one of my favorite times to be there. And Saumur is especially beautiful. Close friends of my grandparents lived there, so growing up I spent quite a few summer weekends there. I love it.

It's true, France can be busy in July but early July in wonderful in the Loire Valley, before the rest of Europe start their vacations in late July. Paris does close down in August, but beautiful towns like Saumur, Tours and Angers are bustling with life, reached by quiet roads scattered with fairy tale chateaux alonside.
